Description

July 7, 1990: Saba Saba. City rioters burnt buses and stoned motorists as they fought running battles with anti-riot policemen in Nairobi streets and estates and scores of people sustained injuries. The riots were sparked off at Kamukunji Grounds, venue of what had been touted to be a meeting of multi-party advocates. The running battles continued until late into the evening in the sprawling Eastland suburbs as GSU personnel who had camped at the grounds sprang into action charging into the crowd swinging their batons and firing tear gas. The Saba Saba riots which left over 20 people dead Here, Veteran politicians Martin Shikuku (left) and James Orengo flashing the Opposition’s two-finger salute as they head to the Kamukunji Grounds, Nairobi, for a rally on 16/11/1991 to press for multiparty democracy.
