Description

May 20, 1982: President Daniel Moi (right) expels Jaramogi Oginga Odinga (left) from the Kenya African National Union (KANU). The action was prompted by Mr. Odinga’s recent activities in Kenya and abroad, President Moi said. He said he had given Mr. Odinga freedom, but he misused it during his travels, to several parts of the world as well as within the country by addressing press conferences. “Which country in Africa has such freedom?” the President asked, adding: “Odinga has insulted my Ministers and attacked my government. Does he think he is the boss in this country?” _ Some people were living like Alice in Wonderland, President Moi said, referring to the satirical English literature masterpiece on ‘British politicians. He said the Luo no longer followed Mr. Odinga sheepishly. “Let Odinga know the Luo community is not, with him. Let Odinga and those with whom he is loitering know the Luo community wants development,” President Daniel Moi added, and said he (Moi) had loyally served the late President Jomo Kenyatta from 1965 when Mr. Odinga was writing a book called Not Yet Uhuru.
