Description

September 10, 1978: Former Vice-President Mr. Oginga Odinga backs President Daniel Arap Moi as the new President of Kenya. Mr. Odinga said: “In the interests of our country, President Moi should be given the chance to be the second President of the Republic of Kenya, so that the smooth transition should be allowed, to continue in an orderly and peaceful manner.” Mr. Odinga, former leader of the banned opposition party, Kenya People’s Union, however, cautioned that, “those who will have the privilege of choosing the President next month should bear in mind that the future of Kenya depends heavily on our strict adherence of the Constitution.” President Moi was yet to exercise fully the Office of the presidency following the death of President Jomo Kenyatta. Here, President Daniel Moi and Ford Kenya Chairman Oginga Odinga (right) exchange views during opening of the Bondo Teachers Training College in Bondo, Siaya District on June 14, 1993.
