December 27, 1991: Former Cabinet Minister Paul Joseph Ngei who was declared bankrupt in November 1990 defects from Kanu and announced that he intends to form a party of his own. Mr. Ngei said that he would not join the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD) as it has been penetrated by people of questionable character. The former Minister called on Dr. Munyua Waiyaki, Mr. Gitobu Imanyara, and Mr. Andrew Ngumba and others who he described as clean to leave FORD and join him in the formation of his party. Asked if he was working with Mr. Mwai Kibaki, Mr. Ngei said: Kibaki is a good man. I can work with him.
