Description

August 22, 1978: Vice President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi is sworn in as acting President by then Chief Justice Sir James Wicks following the death of President Jomo Kenyatta that morning. In 1976, ministers from the inner circle of the Gikuyu, Embu, Meru Association (Gema) elite had called for a constitutional amendment so that the Vice-President would not automatically succeed the President in the event of the latter’s death, illness or insanity but Attorney-General Charles Njonjo put an end to the calls and warned that, “It is a criminal offence to compass, imagine, devise or intend the death or the deposition of the President,” paving the way for Moi to become president.
