August 12, 2002: Two of the harshest critics of the Uhuru-for-President campaign – Environment minister Joseph Kamotho and assistant minister Fred Gumo are dumped unceremoniously from the Government. And in a clear signal of his continuing determination that Mr. Kenyatta should succeed him, President Moi appointed to the Cabinet Safina MP Ngenye Kariuki, an influential businessman from Central Province who was an enthusiastic backer of the Kenyatta cause. Mr. Kariuki, MP for Kiharu, became Vocational Training minister, replacing Mr. Isaac Ruto who was moved sideways to take Mr. Kamotho’s old job at Environment
