Description

March 8, 1992: The Government denies that it was holding 52 political prisoners. In a statement, the Attorney-General, Mr. Amos Wako,” said the government knew of only 21 people who were being held for politically related charges. Of the 52 persons alleged to be still incarcerated, 31 persons are not in fact incarcerated. Of the remaining 21, 11 are prisoners, eight are in custody awaiting trial and information on two is still awaited.” The AG was responding to the plea by representatives of the mothers of the alleged 52 political prisoners who called on him in his chambers on February 28. The mothers, who later started a hunger strike at the Freedom Corner in Uhuru Park, were led by Prof Wangari Maathai (Left). Mr. Wako promised the women that he would look into the files of the prisoners they had cited in accordance with the laws of the country and forward their views to the Government. Here the women rehearse how they are going to chain themselves and march to Sheria House.
