October 2, 1973, President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta calls for urgent and effective action to preserve the environment. He said this while officially opening the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) secretariat in Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi. In the photo, President Kenyatta is pictured signing the Visitors’ Book on his right is the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Njoroge Mungai, under whose portfolio the secretariat falls. On Mzee’s left is Mr. Maurice Strong, the Executive Director of the secretariat, and the Nairobi Provincial Commissioner Mr. John G. Mburu.
