September 19, 1993: First National Vice-Chairman Paul Kibugi Muite (3rd from left) and two MPs resigns their party posts. But Mr. Muite, MP for Kikuyu, say he, Mr. Kiraitu Murungi (Right) (Imenti South) and Mr. Farah Maalim (Lagdera) were at the moment not planning to quit the party altogether. Had they done so, they would have lost their parliamentary seats automatically. Mr. Muite said he and his colleagues had no plans to form another party “at the moment,” but were keeping their options open. Mr. Muite held a news conference in his office flanked by Mr. Imanyara and the two MPs. He said none of them would ever defect to Kanu. Mr. Muite said they quit to protest the hijacking of the party secretariat by a small clique and “the high-handed unconstitutional procedure used to dismiss Mr. Gitobu Imanyara.
