Description

September 14, 1966: Central Bank of Kenya is opened, and the country’s first national currency is issued marking the process of winding up of the East African Currency Board which had served East Africa since 1919. President Jomo Kenyatta was the first person to change his old money for the new currency that bore his portrait. Here, President Jomo Kenyatta, accompanied by Dr. Njoroge Mungai, Acting Minister for Finance, cuts the tape at the entrance of the Kenya Central Bank during the opening ceremony.
